This saw in Giswil is the only water-driven historic saw in use in Switzerland. It is operated by volunteers.
The age-old, simple but refined functional prinicple requires no elaborate mechanical parts. It is manufactured entirely from local wood. It is astonishing how little water is required to set the big water wheel in motion. The thickest tree trunks are cut through effortlessly.
The themed path to the Steibi tells much about the strenuous work of the lumberjacks and the way wood used to be brought to the saw.
