The North Side High School Mariachi was formed in 1980 under the auspices of the Texas Commission on the Arts and Artist-in-Residence William Gradante. The program, one of the first of its kind in the United States (and, thus, in the world) was extremely well received by the City of Fort Worth and especially by the North Side Hispanic Community.
Espuelas de Plata has earned many opportunities to represent the Fort Worth Independent School District at various mariachi conferences, mariachi competitions and music conferences throughout the United States.
Mariachi Espuelas de Plata has been selected to perform at clinics and concerts throughout Texas and the United Sates including Las Cruces, Albuquerque, Chicago, Los Angeles, and even traveled to New York City where they were invited to perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the Under the Western Sky Concert.
In addition to traveling for competitions and concerts, the North Side High School Mariachi has been invited to perform and present clinics at various conferences including, the Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) Convention, the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Convention and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. In 2015, Mariachi Espuelas de Plata was one of five arts groups selected to perform at Arts Education Days at the Capitol in Austin, Texas.
