Lake Engstlen lies at the upper end of the Gen valley by the Joch Pass (2207 m) and at the foot of the tallest mountain in the region, the Titlis (3238 m). Located at alt. 1850 metres, the lake is a popular destination with day-trippers, especially as it's so close to the Titlis. It can be easily reached from Engelberg by aerial cableway, followed by a chairlift ride to the Jochpass and a 15-minute walk. A visit to the lake is often combined with a longer excursion taking in three similarly sized lakes in the region: you can walk from Engelberg to Lakes Trüb, Tannen and Melch and return to the valley from Melchsee-Frutt. This outing is known as the Four Lakes Trail.
