Memories and consequences of the 2005 flood disaster in Obwalden

From August 21 to 23, 2005, heavy rain in Obwalden caused extreme flood levels, landslides and debris flows, resulting in damage amounting to CHF 400 million. Engelberg was barely accessible for weeks. Dr. Josef Hess, then Head of the Natural Hazards Department, played a key role in managing the disaster and planning flood protection measures. As Director of Construction of the Canton of OW, he was one of the first to climb out of the drill head end of the Sarneraa spillway tunnel on March 15, 2023.

The event will take place in the Sust in the Grafenort manor house, admission is free (collection). The café-bar in the Sust opens at 6.45 pm. Please note: The number of places is limited - the principle of “first come, first served” applies.
