concert
Italian vocal music of the early Baroque by the two Monteverdi contemporaries Lodovico Grossi da Viadana and Alessandro Grandi with the soloist ensemble Novocanto under the direction of Willi Derungs
The professional soloist ensemble Novocanto sings motets for 1 to 5 voices by Lodovico Grossi da Viadana (around 1560 - 1627) and Alessandro Grandi (around 1586 - 1630).
Viadana was a composer and member of the Franciscan order. He was appointed choirmaster at Mantua Cathedral in 1594 and went to Rome in 1597. Back in Mantua, he became choirmaster at San Lucca in 1602.
He composed pieces from the "Cento concerti ecclesiastici", op. 12, 1602, such as the "Exultate justi", a "Salve Regina", the solo motets "O dulcissima Maria" and "O quam suavis est, Domine".
Alessandro Grandi worked as a chapel singer at San Marco in Venice from 1617 and also as vice-chapel master from 1620. In 1627, he was appointed to the position of chapel master at Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. In addition to instrumental music, he created important sacred compositions.
The 5-part "Ave Regina", the solo motets "O quam tu pulchra es", "O intemerata" and "O quam dulcis" are performed from his 6 books of motets (1614 - 1630).
