The Sonnenberg – Lucerne’s mini local mountain

Discover Lucerne’s popular leisure and recreational area between Kriens and Lucerne.

The easiest way to access the Sonnenberg between mid April and 1 November is via the «little blue train» from Kriens. This shuttle funicular was built in 1902 to link Kriens with the erstwhile Grand Hotel Sonnenberg. The bogies and tracks are original.

Alternatively, VBL bus number 10 takes you all the way from Lucerne to Obergütsch (where the bus terminates), whereupon it’s a 20–30 minute walk to the top terminus of the Sonnenberg funicular.

Impressive panoramic views may be enjoyed from its terrace as well as from many other vantage points. On show are the Central Swiss mountains including the Pilatus, the Stanserhorn, the Bürgenstock and the Rigi , not forgetting Lucerne and Lake Lucerne.

The Sonnenberg is home to

  • A children’s playground
  • The Zwergenweg (Gnome Trail), a circular path centred on the station featured in the children’s book «Der Sonnenzwerg und s blaue Bähnli». It takes a good 60 minutes to complete and is not suitable for baby strollers.
  • Footpaths
  • The Sonnenberg Vitaparcours fitness trail
  • Two Helsana Nordic walking trails starting at Gabeldingen school
  • Six official barbecue spots (wood may be purchased at the top terminus)
  • Two restaurants: Schwyzerhüsli and Sonnenberg
  • Two farm shops: Gabeldingen and Eggenhof
