Landenberg Castle, situated above the village of Sarnen, is the landmark and the actual historical centre of the canton of Obwalden.

 The upper castle of Sarnen, as it used to be called, stood on the Landenberg hill, a spur of the Ramersberg, which protrudes far into the valley, as early as the year 1000. In the Middle Ages, the fortress was one of the largest castle complexes in Central Switzerland. From 1646 to 1998, the castle site was the meeting place of the Obwalden cantonal assembly.
