Just beyond the Old Town, or more precisely behind the Musegg Wall, there’s a farm where land has been cultivated for 400 years. The animal farm is now run ecologically and offers visitors a wide-ranging experience.

Tilting their heads, the Alpacas observe the passing townspeople, the highland cattle enjoy the fresh grass, the chickens cluck endlessly and the pigs grunt contentedly in the oasis just behind the Musegg Wall. Buzzing with innovative ideas, Pia and Walter Fassbind have been running the farm devotedly since 2000. The activities offered keep growing: discover, learn, enjoy.

Farm with educational trail

The Fassbinds and their team farm 2.4 hectares of land containing 52 full-standard fruit trees (cherry, apple, pear, medlar, walnut and chestnut). Among the animal residents are four highland cattle, two alpacas, four mini pigs, eight Appenzeller Spitzhauben chicken (including Ueli the cockerel) and a cat. The stable doors are open to visitors: see what home looks like if you’re an animal and follow the educational trail to learn more about life on the farm (complete with exciting quiz).

Between the fragrance of coffee and the smell of the farm – the restaurant

The cosy restaurant (open from Mai til September) serves coffee and cake as well as refreshing home-made Musegg beer. The varied menu changes weekly and the breakfast here is very popular: the restaurant has become a gathering place for the neighbourhood and attracts visitors from near and far. Sit back and relax while your children run off to discover the farm before you even place your order. The shop by the restaurant has a range of souvenirs/gifts.

A hayloft for special occasions

The former hayloft is now an events room: it can be used for all kinds of things, such as play rehearsals, concerts or receptions. Contact the Hinter Musegg team to discuss your requirements. The farm also hosts a summer festival (from the end of June to the beginning of July 2021) with concerts, drama and cabaret.

Schools, workshops and tours

There are activity days for schools, where the children don their wellingtons and help with the mucking out, looking after the animals, planting seedlings and guessing smells. Ecological and historical topics are taught in a fun way, as is the concept of sustainability.

Also hosted here are workshops on beer brewing and on identifying edible and medicinal wild plants. The guided tours range from bird and bat watching to energy-efficient building/living and exploring the habitat of the Musegg Wall or the tower clocks.
