Equipment

For canoe trips on the lake, sea kayaks or open canoes are suitable. Sea kayaks are rather faster and more sporty, with canoes you travel more leisurely. Both types of boats have the option to take luggage along. Essential for canoe trips on the lake are life jackets and clothing adapted to the weather. Above all, you should ensure sufficient cold protection (e.g. fleece, neoprene, waterproof jacket). Spare clothes, which can be useful in case of capsizing, are also recommended. Also, a mobile phone (waterproof packed) and a small first aid kit should be on every trip in the boat.

Safety guidelines

**Weather**
The weather development over the entire route should be observed. The rain radar of MeteoSwiss is particularly helpful. In case of uncertain weather, paddle a shorter distance with various landing spots. Adapt clothing to the weather (sun, rain, and cold protection).

**Water, wind and waves**
Lake Lucerne is, like any other lake, constantly subject to changing conditions. For canoe trips, water temperature, wind and waves are decisive. A tour should only be undertaken by experienced canoeists in cold water (below 15° Celsius). Stay close to the shore in strong wind and/or waves or land if necessary and wait for the wind and waves to subside by the shore. Storm warning: there are two levels, the strong wind warning (40 flashes per minute) indicates the danger of gusts up to 60 km/h and the storm warning (90 flashes per minute) for gusts above 60 km/h.

**Safety**
In addition to natural dangers like wind and waves, other traffic participants on the lake must be observed. Scheduled ships and professional fishermen, as well as sailboats and swimmers, always have the right of way over canoeists. Keep distance from all other (motor) boats and make eye contact when crossing.
