Tolkien Conference Switzerland 2027 – Middle-earth Landscapes
The 3rd Tolkien Conference Switzerland 2027 will take place in Lucerne on Saturday, 13 March 2027, under the theme “Maps & Landscapes in Tolkien's Middle-earth”.
The conference explores the role of maps, landscapes, geography and real-world places in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. A special focus is Tolkien’s journey through Switzerland in the summer of 1911, which many scholars connect with the imaginative landscapes of Rivendell, the Misty Mountains and other locations in Middle-earth.
The academic event brings together international scholars, lecturers, authors and interested readers. It is organized in an academic setting at Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, in cooperation with partners from Switzerland and abroad, including the University of Lausanne and Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
The programme includes lectures, discussions, new research perspectives and opportunities for exchange. The conference is intended both for an academic audience and for Tolkien enthusiasts interested in literature, cartography, landscape and the making of Middle-earth.
The conference language is English. Attendance is free of charge; registration is required.
An optional public evening event launching the Lucerne Tolkien Portal will take place from 19:15 at the Swiss Museum of Transport, Lucerne. Separate registration is required for the evening event.
