Do you know the fairy tale “Hans in Luck”? Of course you do! But what about “Hans in Luck” in today’s world?
The documentary “The Narrative” profiles former banker Kweku Adoboli, who was responsible for one of the biggest scandals in UBS’s history. The word “scapegoat” is never explicitly mentioned. Kweku Adoboli—who could be called our modern-day Hans in Luck—never questions his own responsibility or (shared) guilt for the billions in losses that UBS incurred in 2011. In “The Narrative,” the two filmmakers, Martin Schilt and Bernard Weber, examine the story behind Adoboli’s conviction.
Not only his legal conviction for fraud in court, but also the narrative of the events as portrayed by the media—as well as by UBS lawyers, colleagues, and superiors—provides much food for thought.
