This hike in the Lucerne Midland starts in Beromünster with the collegiate church St. Michael. The hike leads past meadows and forests to the medieval town of Sursee on Lake Sempach. Across flat meadows, it goes through the Wauwilermoos with the pile-dwelling museum, over the Santenberg to Altishofen Castle, and finally via Roggliswil to St. Urban.
The hike takes a little more than two hours, going over meadows past the hamlet of Waldi and the Trinity Chapel in Grüt to the medieval town of Sursee on Lake Sempach. The old town of Sursee, awarded the Wakker Prize, has preserved much of its historical substance. The old town offers a wealth of surprising details from more than 700 years of history. The late Gothic council and market house, the city church of St. George, the bone chapel, and the three monastery courtyards as well as the lower gate with the old marksmen's house and the thieves' tower have been carefully restored over the past four decades.
After a few kilometers, the hiker reaches Lake Mauensee with its water castle. Mauensee is first mentioned in the oldest register of Engelberg Monastery from 1184/1190. After a turbulent history, the Pfyffer family had the current castle built on the island of Lake Mauensee in 1605. Today the castle is privately owned and cannot be entered.
Across flat meadows, the route goes through the Wauwilermoos, where there is a pile-dwelling museum. The area around the now silted-up Wauwilersee is one of the most important find regions of the Stone Age in Central Europe. The archaeological learning path and the pile-dwelling settlement can be freely visited without a guide.
