Water and the view of the mountains accompany us on this hike. Across bridges and along creeks and rivers, we head to Lake Sihl – always surrounded by the Sihl Valley and Ybrig mountains along the way.

Schweiz Mobil 560

The winter walking trail stretches across the wide plain between Unteriberg, Studen, and Lake Sihl. It begins in the small holiday village of Unteriberg, the youngest municipality in the canton of Schwyz, founded in 1884. On the way to Studen, the Minster river accompanies us for a while. From time to time, the gurgling is joined by the hissing of cross-country skis gliding over the trails. Ahead of the Sihl Valley and Ybrig mountains, forested slopes rise.

On the way to Studen, we again walk along a river: the Sihl. It leads us to Lake Sihl, the largest reservoir by area in Switzerland. As on the outbound route, on the way back we repeatedly pass a 'Gaden', a sign of agricultural use of the wide plain beneath whose snow cover lie reed and arable land. Shortly before Unteriberg, we follow the historic country road 'alte Gasse', passing the chapel of Saint Ottilia, built in 1758 (patron saint of the poor and blind).

At the suspension bridge, we encounter the third watercourse of our hike: the Nidlaubach. Here, wooden sculptures by local artists decorate the path. After a walk through the Nidlau district, we finally reach our starting point.
