The lake lies in a rather flat high valley, almost on the saddle to Gental. A road runs along the northern shore, which serves as an access road from Melchsee-Frutt to Tannalp.
Fishingin Lake Tannen
Lake Tannen is very popular with fishermen. Six different species of trout and char are released in this beautiful mountain lake. In winter, ice fishing is offered on the frozen lake.
Fire pits at Tannensee
There are spacious barbecue areas for grilling at the Tannen dam and on the eastern shore of the lake. Dry wood and barbecue grills are available - so grilling sausages is child's play for the whole family.
Hiking
There are marked hiking and walking trails around Lake Tannen. The footpaths are suitable for baby carriages.
Frutt train
The Frutt train runs between Melchsee-Frutt and Tannalp. There are two stops at Tannensee: Tannendamm and Feuerstelle.
A dirt track runs along the southern shore, which leads into the access road on both sides. Neighbouring mountains are the 2441-metre-high Hohmad to the north, the Reissend Nollen (3003 m) to the east, the Wendenstöcke (3042 m) and the Glogghuis (2534 m) to the southwest.
Like Lake Melchsee, Lake Tannen is used by the Obwalden electricity company (EWO) to produce electricity, which is why its water level fluctuates depending on electricity demand.
