Engstlensee is located at the upper end of the Gental valley on the Joch Pass (2207 m) and at the foot of the highest mountain in the region, the Titlis (3238 m).
The mountain lake at 1,850 meters above sea level is a popular excursion destination, especially due to its close proximity to the Titlis. It can be easily reached from Engelberg by cable car and chairlift over the Joch Pass, followed by a 15-minute walk. It is often combined into a tour. The three similarly sized lakes in the region - Trübsee, Tannensee and Melchsee - can be hiked one after the other from Engelberg to Melchsee-Frutt and from there back down into the valley. This hike is known as the 4-lake hike.
Fishermen and hikers will find a paradisiacal landscape here. Boats can be hired at the reception of the Hotel Engstlenalp for a leisurely boat trip on the tranquil Engstlen Lake.
The water from the Engstlen Lake is channelled through a tunnel into the neighbouring Gadmental valley, where it is used in the Fuhren, Hopflauenen and Innertkirchen power stations.
