Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Option:
For those who do not want to take the Schafweg, there is a less demanding mountain trail variant (T3). This is recommended in wet conditions.
For this, we descend via the hut path towards the Maderanertal over the Rimenen to Blindensee (1375 m). During the varied and well-marked ascent to Hinterbalm, we always remain north of the Brunni stream and hike over a initially forested and later shrub- and grass-covered steep slope to the cozy mountain huts of Hinterbalm (1817 m).
Tip:
The Schafweg is a demanding path because it is quite exposed and difficult. It is recommended in good, dry conditions and for experienced mountain hikers.
Safety guidelines
The Schafweg is a demanding path because it is quite exposed and difficult.

Mountain hiking is demanding.
For mountain and alpine trails, knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/fall hazard, weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass, and altimeter belong to the basic equipment.
Additionally, a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies are part of the basic equipment.
It is advisable to make a serious tour planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult in summer. The greatest danger in summer besides the heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small stream into a large river and increase the risk of mudflows and rockfall. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather report when planning tours. Warm thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but front thunderstorms can occur at any time of the day. Generally, it is worth starting early in summer.
Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine trails (white-blue-white marked route), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization & planning of the tours so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.
The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Via Geo Admin you can find many useful information such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures, and also wildlife resting areas are located.
Hikers hike at their own responsibility. The Uri hiking association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Uri Alpenkranz hiking.
Attention:
The Schafweg is a demanding path because it is quite exposed and difficult. It is recommended in good, dry conditions and for experienced mountain hikers.
