  • Destination: Cavardirashütte
Names like Cavardiras, Val Strem, Caischavedra etc. clearly indicate the Romance language boundary. The high-altitude Cavardirashütte is situated on Bündner territory. In 1928, the Winterthur section was granted the hut site by the Disentis monastery. Pure nature, solitary untouchedness, and a magnificent mountain landscape characterize this route.

From Hinterbalm (1817 m) the route follows east of the Brunni creek via Waltersfirn to Ligegg (1899 m) and then switches on a natural bridge to the western side of the valley. At the impressive waterfall, the mountain path leads to the Brunniboden and continues over the beautiful alluvial plain to the ruins of Brunnistafel (2061 m). At the ridge after Brunnistafel, the route crosses back to the east side of the creek on a footbridge on the left. First flat, then ascending, the path leads us through the increasingly barren valley over Ochsenplanggen and Griess to Bündner Biel. Over several rock steps and with the help of holding chains, we reach the large marking (2483 m) and cross a hollow with scree and snow at the foot of the Gwasmet. The further ascent now leads on a new path southwards to a clearly visible cairn (2619 m). Then the route squeezes between the end of the Brunnifirn glacier and the foot of the Gwasmet southern ridge to Fuorcla da Cavardiras. On a slightly ascending path, we reach from the pass the Cavardirashütte SAC (2652 m).

Tip:

The route can be combined with the ascent of the Oberalpstock (3328 m) for the tireless. Otherwise, an additional day should be planned for the easy glacier high tour to the Oberalpstock. A combination with stage 17 is also possible. It is worth it if you are already here.

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

Knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/falling risks, sudden weather changes) is necessary for mountain and alpine hiking trails. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not only smartphone), compass, and altimeter are part of the basic equipment. For alpine hiking trails, rope, ice axe, and possibly crampons are additionally recommended. Furthermore, a pocket first aid kit, rescue blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies are part of the basic equipment.

It is advisable to make serious tour planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest dangers in summer besides the heat are thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small brook into a large river, increasing the risk of mudflows and rockfall. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather report when planning tours. Heat thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. In general, it is worthwhile to start early in summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of the tours so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Via Geo Admin, many useful pieces of information can be found, such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, cow-calf pastures, and wildlife sanctuary areas are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The Uri Hiking Trails Association is not liable for accidents occurring during the Uri Alpine wreath hike.
