To reach the Pörtlilücke via Spillaui, we leave the Etzlihütte SAC (2052 m) heading west and reach a hollow after a first steep ramp in one hour. There, between Vorder- and Hinterspillaui at 2233 m, lies the small, deep-blue Spillauisee, surrounded by the steep mountain chain Sunnig, the Schattig-Wichel, the Graubünden border mountains Piz Giuf and Piz Nair, as well as the southern ridge spurs of Bristenstock.

The path ascends steeper above the hollow near Hinter Spillaui (2289 m) through fine scree and later coarse block terrain to the Hubel (2416 m) and over a final steep section—where snow often still lies deep into summer—to the Pörtlilücke situated at 2505 m.

There, the panorama changes: west Urner Alps greet over the Taghorn. The steep descent between the "stotzigen" Ruchen and the equally steep Sunnig Wichel leads through a rubble and debris channel towards Hinter-Pörtlistäfeli and one level down next to Pörtlibach to the alpine ruins of Pörtlistäfeli (1872 m). Then the path goes downhill until the profile near the alpine huts of Vorder Waldi (1508 m) becomes flatter. Finally, after more than a thousand meters of descent on the knees, you cross the Fellibach footbridge to reach the day’s goal, the low-lying Treschhütte SAC (1475 m).

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

For mountain and alpine hiking trails, knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/fall hazard, weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with a grippy sole, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass, and altimeter are part of the basic equipment. Additionally, basic equipment includes a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies.

It is recommended to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult in the summer. The greatest danger in summer besides heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small brook into large rivers and increase the danger of mudslides and rockfall. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather report when planning routes. Warm thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time. In general, it is worth starting early in summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of the routes so guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Through Geo Admin, you can find many useful pieces of information, such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures, and also wildlife rest zones are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The Uri Hiking Trails Association is not liable for accidents occurring during the Uri Alpenkranz hike.
