We hike through two valleys separated by the Oberalppass, which differ in landscape. The language region is different, the experience world similar: The steep slab flight of Schijen faces the gentle summit of Pazolastock and instead of “welcome” you say “bein vegni”.

From the Treschhütte SAC (1475 m) we follow the valley incision of Fellital to Hinter Waldi, where a huge boulder lies by the path. Here the trail switches to the other side of the valley to the alpine huts of Obermatt (1839 m) and leads us, well marked, further to Murmetsbiel (2010 m). Often snow remnants still lie in the large hollow of Breitplanggen well into the summer. Then the climb becomes steeper. We reach via block debris the Fellilücke (2476 m). The view shows to the left of the Pazolastock the entrance of Val Maighels and the glacier of Piz Ravetsch points us the direction. Along the Hinter Fellibach it goes downwards via Hinter Felli (2254 m) to the Oberalppass (2044 m). Slightly below the pass towards Tavetsch, next to the second hairpin bend, the hut path branches off southwards through the steep slopes below Piz Nurschalas and through the Plauncas Cuflegl (signpost).

Protected moorlands and rare alpine flowers line the well-made path. Next follow Trutg-Nurschalas and Plidutscha and after a valley step the azure Lai Urlaun (2249 m). At the foot of Piz Cavradi flutters the Graubünden flag of Camona da Maighels SAC (2310 m).

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

Knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/fall hazard, sudden weather changes) is necessary for mountain and alpine hiking trails. Solid hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not only smartphone), compass and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. Additionally, a pocket pharmacy, emergency blanket and mobile phone for emergencies are part of the basic equipment.

It is advisable to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest danger in summer apart from the heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail quickly turn a small brook into large rivers, and the risk of mudflows and rockfall increases. Therefore, interpreting the weather report during route planning is important. Warm thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. In general, it is worth being on the move early in the summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of the tours, so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Via Geo Admin you can find many useful information such as where pastures with guard dogs, mother cow pastures and also wildlife resting areas are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The Uri hiking trails association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Uri Alpenkranz hike.
