The starting point of this impressive hike is the Klausenpass. Here, on the left side of the valley, the high-altitude trail begins towards the east flank of the Brunnital. The route leads like a nature trail balcony through the habitat of the Schächental alpine farming families, passing Unter- and Oberstäfel, deeply cut valleys, as well as depressions and ridges.

Behind the chapel at the Klausenpass (1948 m) begins the left-side high trail that leads us over several watercourses and interesting karst fields to the Chammlialp (2053 m). The wide view over the entire Schächental down to the Reuss valley is magnificent. Then we cross the moraine of the Griess glacier, descend part of the somewhat exposed path down to the alpine hut Oberalp, and reach the Nideralp along the rocks via a steep zigzag trail. Inspiring are the hikes towards the basin of the Alp Wannelen (1633 m, cable car) and the well-developed forest trail westwards to the Alp Trogen (1551 m). Via the newly built forest road to Niederlammerbach, we then reach the Alp Brunnital through the shady spruce forest. A light final ascent brings us to the scenic terrace of the Sittlisalp (1650 m), and like through a window, the gigantic steep limestone walls of the Windgällen – Ruchen chain present themselves in the background of the Brunnital.

Tips:

Chammlialp is the highest mountain cow pasture in Uri. Here we enjoy a well-deserved refreshment and strength from the alpine production in the alpine hut.

Take your time to enjoy the alpine atmosphere and visit the Sittlisalp alpine cheese dairy.

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

For mountain and alpine trails, knowledge of hazards in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/falling danger, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with a good grip sole, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic maps (not just smartphone), compass, and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. For alpine trails, rope, ice axe, and possibly crampons are additionally recommended. The basic equipment also includes a first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies.

It is advisable to do a serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The biggest danger in summer besides heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail quickly turn small brooks into big rivers and increase the danger of mudflows and rockfall. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather forecast when planning trips. Warm thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time. In general, it is worthwhile to start early in summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of the tours so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Via Geo Admin, you can find many useful information such as where herds with guard dogs, mother cow pastures, and also wildlife rest zones are located.

Hikers hike at their own responsibility. The Uri Hiking Trails Association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Uri Alpenkranz hike.
