- Start: Mountain inn Susten Hospiz
- Destination: Sustlihütte
Just a few minutes from the Sustenhospiz (2260 m), the white-blue-white marked alpine path leads us from the ridge of the Heuberg high above the Susten road toward the Sustenloch. Over snowfields, we reach in a northeast direction the Sustenlochfirn. After this passage over the glacier – or what remains of it – the alpine connecting route leads to the saddle between Sustenlochspitz and Guferstock. There we reach the deeply cut Guferjoch (2560 m). Besides the jagged Fünffingerstöcke, the wild-torn Trotzig-Wichelplangg chain shapes the steep mountain landscape above the valley.
From the Guferjoch, the route leads by means of chains and handrails to the firn or scree field south of the Firenplangg. Then we descend a moraine ridge and traverse at varying heights the valley basin of Kleinsustlifirn. Over several branched mountain streams and glacier-polished slabs, we reach the Sustlihütte SAC (2257 m).

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Tip:
The Sustliweg over the Guferjoch is quite stony! A via ferrata set and, for inexperienced mountain hikers, a local mountain guide or hiking leader is recommended for this alpine route.
Option:
To avoid the alpine route, we hike from the Sustenhospiz over the old Sustenweg down into the Chalchtal to the Gufernalp and then ascend following the signposts to the Sustenbrüggli. Here two marked hut ascents branch off: the easier one via the Sustliboden and the other via the Pöschenstöckli (ladder route) - about 1 hour each.
Safety guidelines
Mountain hiking is demanding.
For mountain and alpine hiking routes, knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/fall hazard, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with a grippy sole, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not only smartphone), compass, and altimeter are part of the basic equipment. Additionally, a first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies belong to the basic equipment.
It is advisable to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest dangers in summer besides heat are thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small stream into large rivers, increasing the danger of mudslides and rockfall. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather forecast when planning routes. Warm thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of the day. In general, it is worthwhile to start early in summer.
Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine routes (marked white-blue-white), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization & planning of the routes so that guests can enjoy the hike easily.
The Urner Wanderplaner and the Uri Outdoor App help with planning. Via Geo Admin, many useful information such as pastures with guardian dogs, cow pastures, and wildlife conservation areas can be found.
Hikers hike at their own risk. The Urner Wanderwege association is not liable for accidents occurring during the Urner Alpenkranz hikes.
Attention:
The "Sustliweg" over the Guferjoch is quite stony! Via ferrata set recommended.
For inexperienced mountain hikers, we recommend a mountain guide or a qualified hiking leader for the alpine route.
