The Etzel West barrier line was built as part of General Guisan’s Reduit strategy during World War II. The tank barriers visible today were intended to prevent a breakthrough into the Sihlsee area.
Until a few years ago, the bunkers and fortifications around Etzel were top secret. After proper restoration, a part of these facilities is now open for group and school class visits. On this circular route, you will pass by no fewer than six military constructions. At Etzelkulm, the climb is rewarded with a magnificent view and a playground.
The hike also leads along the well-preserved Enzenau raised bog. The bog offers ideal conditions for rare plants such as the carnivorous sundew to grow.
