On the circular route from Pfäffikon around the Schwändi area back to the starting point, you encounter historic traffic routes that were formerly used as pilgrim paths.

The route from Altendorf on Lake Zurich up to Einsiedeln was formerly an intensively used pilgrim path. According to stories, the path over the Etzel to the monastery village was mainly used by pilgrims from southern Germany. The path is still lined with chapels, wayside shrines, as well as dry stone walls. These strongly highlight the former significance of this path. Today, this route is considered a historic traffic route of national importance.

Getting there

From Zurich:

  • Take the A3 motorway from Zurich towards Chur, exit 40 Pfäffikon / Rapperswil / Altendorf.
  • Take the right lane to enter towards Pfäffikon / Altendorf. At the traffic light, turn left towards Pfäffikon.
  • In the first roundabout, take the second exit.
  • In the second roundabout, take the first exit and follow the signs to Pfäffikon station.

From Chur:

  • Take the A3 motorway from Chur towards Zurich, exit 40 Pfäffikon / Rapperswil.
  • Take the right lane to enter towards Pfäffikon / Altendorf. At the traffic light, turn left towards Pfäffikon.
  • In the first roundabout, take the second exit.

From Lucerne, Zug, Schwyz:

  • From Lucerne, Zug, or Schwyz take the cantonal road via Sattel, Rothenthurm, Biberbrugg, Schindellegi to Pfäffikon.
  • In Pfäffikon, turn right onto Churerstrasse.
  • In the roundabout, take the third exit and follow the signs to Pfäffikon station.
