The fairytale winter landscape in the Langis/Glaubenberg offers a unique backdrop for snowshoe hikers.

From Langis, follow the pass road for a good 500 m. At the  "Zivilfahrzeuge" (civilian vehicles) signpost, you leave the road and follow the track that leads through scattered pine forest and up an ancient path to Alp Schnabel. From there, the little snow-covered road leads up to the narrow ridge cut at Point 1755, where you climb the ridge to the Seewenegg and Rickhubel. On the way, a window opens first to the south into the Bernese Alps and then to the north-east with wonderful views of the Pilatus chain, Lake Lucerne and the Sarneraa valley.

The round tour leads eastwards over the summit slope and terrain terraces down to Alp Rick. Freshly snow-covered slopes tempt you to make your own tracks and then to follow the safer official trail in a column to the Glaubenberg pass in the narrowing valleys. The restaurant at the pass summit, which is open at weekends, weather permitting, is always good for enjoying Obwalden specialities after completing the tour before returning to the car park in Langis in 20 minutes.

Recommendation

From Rickhubel, a descent in a westerly direction to the idyllic Sewenseeli lake and its scenically dominant chapel is also a tempting option. It is fantastically beautiful there at any time of year: the perfect place to enjoy tranquillity and pristine surroundings.

Safety guidelines

The snowshoe tour and the description were developed in collaboration with local mountain and tour guides. It is only a suggested tour and is not signposted or protected from alpine hazards. It does not pass through wildlife protection zones and avoids obvious danger spots in good snow and avalanche conditions.

Good preparation for the tour with the appropriate equipment is essential. Information about the latest avalanche situation can be found in the links below.

You undertake the tour at your own risk. Obwalden Tourism declines all liability in the event of personal injury or damage to property on the suggested snowshoe tour.

Please note: restrictions due to military activity in the Glaubenberg area may mean the route cannot be followed. Please note the latest live firing schedule.
