The Scheeren nature forest reserve covers over 20 hectares of forest area on the northern slope of the Scheerenspitz. In a nature forest reserve, forestry interventions are completely avoided so that the forest can develop naturally. A nature forest reserve is characterized by the natural development of trees, providing habitat for countless living beings throughout their entire development. About one fifth of the forest’s animals and plants depend on deadwood as a habitat and food source.
The elongated moraine ridges and cone-shaped moraine hills create a lively topography. In the depressions and hollows, a variety of smaller raised and lowland bogs have developed. The mostly forested, near-natural river valley of the Sihl is characterized over long stretches by partly vertical Nagelfluh walls, gullies, and slope cracks. The boulders lying in the riverbed give the river valley a wild character.
