The vast karst area of the Silberen, shimmering silver in summer, is worth a visit in any season. Directly below lies the famous Hölloch, one of the longest cave systems worldwide with 204 km. In winter, the wide open slopes attract not only ski tourers but also persistent snowshoe hikers.

On the ascent, you have the tough choice: either follow the summer path up to the Pragel Pass and then head southwards to the Chalberloch, or take the route through the Bödmeren, the largest primeval forest in the Alps, on both ascent and descent. Since the Bödmeren lies in a federal hunting reserve, the green marked trail requirement must be observed. Like columns, slender spruce trees up to 500 years old line the way up to the Roggenloch. Via the extensive Twärenen you reach the summit, which offers a magnificent panoramic view. The return path via the Pragel Pass caps off a long, eventful day. The circuit is also suitable as a ski tour.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

This circuit is also very rewarding for ski tourers, but less so for snowboarders due to the relatively long flat sections.

Safety guidelines

Because of the sinkholes and karst rocks, the terrain must be perfectly snow-covered.
