Tracing the History of the Double Monastery Engelberg 1120–1615
For nearly five centuries, Engelberg was a double monastery. It was only in the year 1615 that the community of sisters was moved to Sarnen. The exhibition focuses on the diverse memorabilia of the former presence of nuns. It sheds light on the self-image and the external perception of the double monastery in documents, memorial books, and anniversary books. Artworks, textiles, magnificently illustrated psalters, as well as simple practical manuscripts convey an idea of the mystical spirituality of the women's monastery.
