The Atelier Hess is a tribute to Eugen Hess-Waser – a visionary host, hotel builder, and pioneer of hydropower at the beginning of the 20th century. Known as “Sager genius”, he utilized the hydropower of the Erlenbach, established the first year-round operating power plant in Engelberg in 1891, and secured water rights for the region early on. As a host, he opened the Pension Hess in Engelberg in 1884 and at the end of the 1880s the Berghotel Trübsee at an altitude of 1800 m above sea level – a visionary step for the early alpine tourism development.
Today, the Atelier Hess connects to his spirit of creativity: in light-filled rooms with an atelier character, cooking, experimenting, and creating are done with passion – entirely in the spirit of a man who took risks and created great things.
