Accessible trip to Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi (1,798 m above sea level) offers great views of the Central Swiss Alps and lakes all year round. It is rightly called the “Queen of the Mountains”: Whether relaxed train rides, viewpoints with easy access, or comfortable walking paths – you can enjoy Mount Rigi very well even with a wheelchair or limited mobility.

Accessibility

  • Accessibility mountain railways: You can find information here. Please register wheelchairs one day before your travel date, so the Rigi staff is prepared and can help you. Registration by email ([email protected]) or phone (+41 41 399 87 87). For guests with electric wheelchairs, arrival via Vitznau is generally recommended.
  • Accessibility hotels and restaurants: You can find information here. For further questions, the guest service is available by phone at +41 41 399 87 87 or by email ([email protected]).
  • E-wheelchair rental: Thanks to the JST Multidrive electric wheelchair sponsored by the Cerebral Foundation, wheelchair users can easily manage bumpy hiking trails and steep climbs. The wheelchair may only be used on defined routes. Maps and tour information are available on site and online. The e-wheelchair is suitable for children from 10 years old when accompanied by an adult. You can find more information about the period, prices, and reservation of the e-wheelchair here
  • Accessible hikes: Rigi also offers fantastic accessible hikes with unique views for people with disabilities or hikers with strollers. Without obstacles, you can walk comfortably through the beautiful mountain landscape. The following hikes are accessible: Rigi Känzeli walking path, Rigi First trail, Rigi Panorama trail
  • Mobility lifts at train stations: The Rigi railways use boarding and unloading ramps and, where technically possible, mobility lifts that make getting on and off the train cars easier. From Vitznau, low-floor trains usually operate, which makes boarding and exiting easy.
  • Wheelchair-accessible toilet on the Panorama trail: The entire Panorama trail between Rigi Scheidegg and Rigi Kaltbad/Chänzeli is over 7.5 km long. At Unterstetten, there is an accessible toilet located at the rest area.
  • Wheelchair-accessible e-bus: Thanks to the support of the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation and other sponsors, a wheelchair-accessible electric bus has been operating on Rigi since June 2017, offering space for two wheelchairs. Here you can find prices and further information.
  • Tickets: You can buy tickets for your journey online in advance. This way you avoid waiting at the valley station. Here you can access the official ticket shop of Lucerne Tourism.
Tip: You can ideally combine your visit to Rigi with a boat trip from Lucerne. This way, you can experience Lake Lucerne and the wonderful mountain scenery in one day.
