The hike leads from the mountain village Wassen (915 m) along the historic Old Sustenweg into the wild and impressive Meiental. At Sustenbrüggli (1908 m) begins the scenic ascent via the alpine Leiterliweg. Sure-footedness and a head for heights are required here, but the spectacular mountain scenery and the deep views into the valley make the path a special experience. The destination is the idyllically situated Sustlihütte (2257 m) – a perfect place for a well-deserved rest or an overnight stay in the middle of the high alpine world.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
The wild Meiental offers beautiful scenery and options for shorter circular hikes via Sustenpass, Sustli, and Sewenhütte.
Option:
- It is possible to take the bus to Sustenpass, stay overnight at the Sustenhospiz (2260 m) with fantastic views of the Bernese Oberland Alps and towards the Urner Alps, and hike the alpine trail Guferjoch (Urner Alpenkranz, Stage 32. b) to Sustlihütte.
Safety guidelines
- Mountain hiking is demanding.
- For mountain and alpine trails, knowledge of mountain dangers (rockfall, slip/fall hazard, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographical maps (not just a smartphone), compass, and altimeter are part of the basic equipment. Additionally, a first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies are also part of the basic equipment.
- It is advisable to carry out serious tour planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest dangers in summer besides heat are thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail quickly turn small streams into large rivers, increasing the risk of mudslides and rockfalls. Therefore, interpreting the weather forecast is important when planning tours. Heat thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. In general, it is worth starting early in the summer.
- Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take care of the organization and planning of tours so guests can simply enjoy the hike.
- The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Through Geo Admin, many useful information can be found, such as where pastures with guard dogs, suckler cow pastures, and wildlife reserves are located.
- Hikers hike at their own risk. The Uri hiking association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Urner Alpenkranz hike.
