The white-blue-white marked alpine route winds over the Rot Bergli and descends into the secluded Gornerental. Unique on this route are the various mountain views offered and the largely unknown Gornerental, which is bounded in the northwest by the Saas Stock, the Krönten, the Zwächten, and the Bächenstock.

We leave the rocky summit of the scenic Sewenhütte SAC (2148 m) heading northeast down into the hollow of the Seewenalp and, after crossing the Seebach between rock bands, ascend at constant altitude to the Schafgand. Now the ascent becomes steeper, and the route winds in several hairpin bends up to the pass of the Rot Bergli (2406 m). After enjoying a dreamlike panoramic view, we descend in an east-northeast direction over stepped rocks and ledges into the secluded Gornerental down into the hollow of Laucheren and here turn north towards Miesplanggen.

We then follow a gully down to a small gorge and descend from there keeping right. After crossing a small stream, we reach through shrub-covered slopes at the large rock blocks of Hobäng (1810 m) the valley floor of the Gornerental. Along the alpine farm road, we hike through the charming Gornerental out to Rinderboden and Rosti, further to the dairy hut Ruepenstafel (1422 m). A gentle hike brings us next over the dam Grueben down to the small road leading to the mountain village Gurtnellen. After the long stage, we look forward to some refreshment and enjoy the amenities at the Gasthaus im Feld (930m) or Gasthaus Bergheim (935 m).

Tip:

The famous alpine cheese from the Gornerenalp is processed in the dairy hut on the Ruepenstafel. Between 50,000 and 60,000 liters of milk are made into a mild, full-fat alpine cheese each summer.

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

For mountain & alpine hiking trails, knowledge of hazards in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/fall danger, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass, and altimeter are part of the basic equipment. Additionally included in the basic equipment are a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies.

It is recommended to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. Weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest danger in summer besides heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small brook into large rivers and increase the danger of mudslides and rockfalls. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather report when planning tours. Warm thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. In general, it is worth being on the trail early in the summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white marked route), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization & planning of the tours so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Through Geo Admin, you can find many useful pieces of information such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures, and also wildlife resting zones are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The Uri hiking trails association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Uri Alpenkranz hikes.
