Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Tip:
Those who do not get enough on the alternative route (option) can climb from the Chulm to the Gamperstock (2275 m), which is about 100 m higher. A magnificent panoramic view compensates for this detour.
Option:
Adventurous people can bypass the Gamperstock on the north side, without too much altitude loss, after Chinzig Chulm towards the southeast on the old, partly unmarked and unpaved alpine path over the «Geissgrätlichrächen» - a sensational limestone landscape.
The descent goes in the direction of Sidenplangg via Obflüeweid and Rietlig to Ratzi (T4).
Safety guidelines
Mountain hiking is demanding. Knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, risk of slipping/falling, sudden weather changes) is necessary for mountain and alpine hiking trails.
Sturdy hiking shoes with a grippy sole, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass and altimeter are part of the basic equipment. For alpine hiking trails, rope, ice axe and possibly crampons are additionally recommended. Additionally, a first aid kit, emergency blanket and mobile phone for emergencies are part of the basic equipment.
It is advisable to make serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest danger in summer besides heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail quickly turn a small stream into large rivers and increase the risk of mudslides and rockfalls. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather report when planning routes. Heat thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of the day. In general, it is worthwhile to be on the move early in summer.
Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of the tours so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.
The Urner hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Via Geo Admin you find many useful information such as where pastures with guardian dogs, suckler cow pastures and also wildlife resting areas are located.
Hikers hike at their own risk. The Urner Wanderwege association does not assume liability for accidents occurring during the Urner Alpenkranz hike.
Attention at the alpine route over the «Geissgrätlichrächen»:
The route is difficult to find in poor visibility. Beware of grooves and holes!
