From Brunnen to Buochs is a more demanding and longer route, but also very varied with a natural spectacle along the way, the waterfall at Risleten.

At the entry point, cross the lake towards Treib. Conditions must be good, i.e. little wind and waves. Please be aware of ship traffic.

1.0 km:
We advise against crossing Lake Uri. There is often strong, suddenly arising wind and high waves. The rocky shore makes landing impossible. The route continues westwards to Beckenried.

1.5 km:
Continue paddling along the shore. Beware of passenger ships at the Treib ship station.
At Treib there is a resting possibility (restaurant / toilet facilities). Afterwards follows a wooded shore zone without ideal landing options.

3.5 km:
Another resting opportunity is at the Schwybogen restaurant. The following shore zone is rocky without ideal landing possibilities.

6.5 km:
At Risleten there is a large gravel dredger floating. Paddle swiftly with plenty of distance past the dredger, especially when it is in operation.

6.5 km:
The resting place Risleten (small harbour) can be reached at the last yellow buoy. There are no toilet facilities. On foot, you reach an impressive waterfall 200 meters away.

8.0 km:
The bathing place Rütenen has toilet facilities. Barbecuing is prohibited. Afterwards follows mainly inhabited private property.

10.0 km:
Beware of passenger ships at the Beckenried ship station.

12.0 km:
Beware of the ferry at the Beckenried ferry station.

13.0 km:
The bathing area Neuseeland has toilet facilities. The further path mainly passes inhabited private parcels.

14.5 km:
Beware of passenger ships at the Buochs ship station.

15.0 km:
At the river mouth of Engelberger Aa, be cautious of the current. Keep sufficient distance.

15.5 km:
The exit is at the Nidwalden water sports center, south side of the boat harbor.

Equipment

For canoe tours on the lake, sea kayaks or open canoes are recommended. Sea kayaks are generally faster and more sporty, while with canoes you travel more leisurely. For both types of boats, there is the possibility to carry luggage. Essential for canoe tours on the lake are life jackets and weather-appropriate clothing. Above all, you should ensure sufficient protection against the cold (e.g. fleece, neoprene, waterproof jacket). Spare clothes are also recommended, which can be very useful in the event of a capsize. Also, a mobile phone (waterproof packed) and a small first aid kit should be on board for every tour.

Safety guidelines

Weather
The weather development over the entire tour should be observed here. Particularly helpful is the rain radar from MeteoSwiss. In uncertain weather conditions, it is better to paddle shorter distances with various landing points. Adapt clothing to the weather (sun, rain, and cold protection).

Water, Wind and Waves
Lake Lucerne is, like any other lake, constantly exposed to changing conditions. Crucial for canoe tours are water temperature, wind and waves. With cold water (below 15° Celsius), a tour should only be undertaken by experienced canoeists. In case of strong wind and/or waves, stay near the shore or if necessary get out of the boat and wait for the wind and waves to calm down at the shore. Storm warning: There are two levels, the strong wind warning (40 flashes per minute) warns of gusts up to 60 km/h and the storm warning (90 flashes per minute) of gusts over 60 km/h.

Safety
Besides the natural hazards such as wind and waves, other water users on the lake must be especially observed. Passenger ships and professional fishermen, as well as sailboats and swimmers, always have the right of way over canoeists. Keep distance from all other (motor) boats and establish eye contact when crossing paths.
