Equipment

Personal equipment

-Synthetic clothing is a good option (dries faster)
-Sturdy footwear that can get wet (no flip-flops or rubber boots)
-Rain pants/rain jacket
-Sun protection
-Sunglasses
-Eyeglass strap
-Change of clothes (if possible, leave at the destination in the car)
-Towel
-Dry bag/waterproof barrel
-Food supply
-First aid kit
-Phone
-Trash bag

Air and water temperature as well as wind, sun, and weather influence which clothing is suitable for your canoe trip.

If water temperatures are below 15°C, wearing a wetsuit (long john with neoprene jacket) or a drysuit is recommended. Under a wetsuit, only short underwear is worn, while in a drysuit several layers of clothing are worn on top of each other. For the feet, neoprene shoes or neoprene socks are best. This also protects against sharp stones, shells, and rocks.

Safety guidelines

Canoeing on Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne is clearly distinguished from other waters due to its size, geographical location, and unique fauna and flora. Canoeing offers you an extraordinary experience. No other means of transport brings you closer to the water and nature. To move safely on Lake Lucerne and in harmony with nature and the people living here, the following information will help you.

General

Swimming skills are a prerequisite for paddling on the lake.

We recommend wearing a life jacket.

If possible, carry a dry bag/barrel for personal items (phone, food).

Weather

Before starting the route, check the local conditions and the weather and wind situation.
Good visibility and stable weather conditions must be ensured.

At night and in poor visibility, the SUP or kayak/canoe must be equipped with a white all-around light (360 degrees) (headlamps are not sufficient).

Tip: Thunderstorms: These can best be detected with a weather radar app. Additionally, keep an eye on the weather on the lake at all times.

Water temperature

Especially at low water temperatures in the transitional season and during trips that do not take place near the shore, capsizing can be dangerous even for experienced swimmers. We recommend a cold protection suit (wetsuit or drysuit) below 15 degrees water temperature.

Prohibited areas

Entering nature reserves, danger, and bathing zones (marked with yellow buoys) is prohibited.

Water plants like water lilies and reeds often provide nesting places for ducks and birds. Therefore, a distance of at least 25 m must be maintained.

Strong wind and storm warning:

Strong wind warnings are indicated by orange flashing lights (40 x per minute, strong wind). Proceed with caution.

Storm warnings are indicated by orange flashing lights (90 x per minute, storm/about 60 km/h). Proceeding is not allowed, seek shore and take safety precautions.

During thunderstorms/storms, avoid lake crossings. If caught in a thunderstorm, paddle as quickly as possible kneeling (canoe and stand-up paddleboard) or lying down (stand-up paddleboard) to the shore, seek shelter, and wait out the bad weather.
