Equipment
For canoe routes on the lake, sea kayaks or open canoes are recommended. Sea kayaks tend to be faster and more sporty, while open canoes offer a more relaxed pace. Both types of boats allow for packing luggage. Essential for canoe trips on the lake are life jackets and weather-appropriate clothing. Especially important is adequate cold protection (e.g., fleece, neoprene, waterproof jacket). Spare clothes are also advisable, which can be useful in case of capsizing. Also, a mobile phone (waterproof packed) and a small first aid kit should be taken on every trip.

Safety guidelines
Weather
The weather development should be observed throughout the entire route. The rain radar from MeteoSwiss is particularly helpful. If the weather is uncertain, paddle a shorter route with several exit points. Dress according to the weather (sun, rain, and cold protection).
Water, Wind, and Waves
Lake Lucerne, like any other lake, is constantly subject to changing conditions. Key factors for canoe trips are water temperature, wind, and waves. Tours should only be attempted by experienced canoeists if the water is cold (below 15° Celsius). In strong wind and/or waves, stay near the shore or get out of the water and wait for the wind and waves to subside at the shore. Storm warnings: there are two levels: Strong wind warning (40 flashes per minute), indicating gusts up to 60 km/h, and storm warning (90 flashes per minute) for gusts over 60 km/h.
Safety
Besides natural hazards like wind and waves, other traffic participants on the lake must be considered. Passenger ships and professional fishermen, as well as sailboats and swimmers, have priority over canoeists at all times. Keep distance from all other (motor) boats and make eye contact when paths cross.
