From the former muleteer village Hospental with its historic tower, you ascend to the Gotthard Pass (2091 m / 6867 ft). The Gotthard Pass road leads from Hospental past lush green meadows and steep rocky walls. Along the way, you discover a variety of plants and animals. Just before the pass summit, you pass small mountain lakes that invite you to stop and rest. Arriving at the Gotthard Pass, you're rewarded with a breathtaking view and dining opportunities. At the pass summit, not only different cultures and language regions meet, but also the language changes from German to Italian, as do the villages and the culinary offerings, which radiate Italian flair. At the Gotthard Hospice on the pass summit, road cyclists turn onto the historic pass road, the famous Tremola. The spectacular switchbacks down to Airolo are considered the longest monument in Switzerland.
