On a drive over the Oberalp Pass (2046 m above sea level), excursionists are close to the source of the Rhine, which is symbolized by a lighthouse at the pass summit.

The gentle ascent from Andermatt to the pass summit at 2046 m above sea level offers magnificent views of the entire Ursern Valley and the Gemsstock. The route of the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway also leads directly over the pass summit. The panoramic train “Glacier Express” reaches its highest point here on the journey from St. Moritz to Zermatt.

The turquoise Oberalp lake at the pass summit invites you to linger. Here also stands the only and highest lighthouse of the Alps. The replica represents the source of the Rhine, which rises nearby. The original stands at the mouth of the Rhine near Rotterdam.

On the Graubünden side, the road descends somewhat more winding, passing the small village of Tschamut further over Sedrun to Disentis. Here you enter a new language region. In the Surselva, Romansh is predominantly spoken. There are also many culinary delights to discover.
