Vitznauer/Gersauerstock (Wissiflue to Hinterbergen)

The Vitznauer/Gersauerstock is not easy to climb. However, the view and the variety of flora make up for all the effort.

Already the two mountain railways from Vitznau to Wissiflue and back from Hinterbergen at the same place are an attraction. Also the border summit between Lucerne's Vitznau and Schwyz's Gersau with the comprehensive panoramic view and two crosses - one facing Vitznau, the other facing Gersau. However, the approach is fairly steep and the descent partly exposed. Wire ropes and a small ladder help, but do not replace good footwear and surefootedness. If both are available, nothing diminishes a wonderful, not too long mountain adventure.

Directions & Parking facilities

Getting there

Turn off at the Catholic Church Vitznau and first follow Oberdorfstrasse, then along the extension of Buhholzstrasse up to the parking lot of the Hinterbergen cable car.

Parking

At the Hinterbergen cable car.

Public transportation

By SBB and bus to Vitznau. 10 minutes on foot uphill to the valley stations of both railways (they are practically in the same place).

Additional information

The Vitznau-Wissiflue railway is operated by the restaurateurs of the Wissiflue restaurant. The railway from Hinterbergen back to Vitznau runs with a coin-operated machine.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

In spring, on the descent, there is a whole wild garlic field in the midst of the open forest. So plan some time to pick some leaves and prepare a fine egg-wild garlic salad at home.
