The lovely Unteralp Valley is always worth a visit. Additionally, numerous hiking routes converge at the intersection of the Urseren Valley. Nestled in a harmonious landscape, framed by Bündner, Ticino, and Uri mountains, the Vermigelhütte lies in the background of the valley.

In a typical glacier-shaped mountain landscape marked by flat moorlands, we hike from the Maighelshütte SAC (2310 m), following the well-marked path past the small Lai Carin (2255 m) and ascend to the flat Lolenpass/ Pass Tagliola (2401 m). Before us lies the Unteralp Valley, opposite the "ski mountain" Gemsstock, and to the right of the Furka Pass, bold granite needles rise into the sky. After the flat part of the pass, the trail suddenly descends steeply. Passing Ober Lolen towards Unter Lolen and after a turn at (Pt. 2230 m), in several dozen zigzag bends, it sharply descends into the valley floor of the Unteralp. Then we hike left with a slight ascent along the Unteralpreuss downstream to Tros and to the Vermigelhütte SAC (2042 m).

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Tip:

It is generally recommended to book hut spaces early. During the season, most huts are often well booked.

Option:

At the Maighelshütte, we are very close to the source of the Rhine. Let's also visit the source. For this, we hike downstream to a prominent signpost that points up a terrain step to Lake Toma. Nestled in a cirque, the crystal-clear source of the Rhine lies before us (2344 m).

The young source faces a 1320 km long journey to the North Sea.

To return to the route, we descend from Lai da Tuma first to about 2174 m and then back up to Lai Urlaun (2249 m).

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

For mountain and alpine hiking trails, knowledge of mountain dangers (falling rocks, slipping/fall risk, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking shoes with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass, and altimeter are part of the basic equipment. Additionally, a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies are part of the basic equipment.

It is advisable to plan tours seriously and prepare carefully for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest dangers in summer besides heat are thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small stream into a large river, increasing the risk of mudslides and rockfalls. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather forecast in tour planning. Warm-season thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. Generally, it is worth being on the trail early in summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine trails (marked white-blue-white), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of tours so guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Through Geo Admin, you find many useful pieces of information, such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures, and wildlife resting areas are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The Urner Wanderwege association is not liable for accidents occurring during the Urner Alpenkranz hike.
