Gateway to the south, watershed and weather divide, pass and transit route, language border, hospice, museum, redoubt and fortress area - the diverse aspects of the Gotthard landscape are as fascinating as the myth of the pass. Its history has left traces over the centuries. As a bearer of secrets, it has also shaped entire generations in their thinking.

We leave the Vermigelhütte SAC (2042 m) and choose the hike over the lonely Sellapass to the lively Gotthardpass. Over the old mule track, we first reach the Zingelfurtflue (2205 m). After a steep section, we reach Summermatten (2375 m) and hike towards the sunny south until the Verborgene Plangge (2470 m), where the path splits. At this fork, we choose the path towards the southwest and reach the crossing, the Passo della Sella (Sellapass, 2700 m). After a short break, we ascend in a southeastern direction to the rocky barren Piz Giübin (2776 m) and enjoy the fantastic panoramic view towards Ticino. The descent from the Sellapass follows the ridge towards Passo Posmeda (2584 m) through rock-strewn slopes down towards the deep blue Lago della Sella.

At a long stable building (point 2522 m), we turn left.

Our path leads directly onto the dam wall and a little later below Monte Prosa onto the road or hiking trail towards Gotthardpass (2107 m).

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

For mountain and alpine hiking trails, knowledge of the dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slip/fall hazard, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. Additionally, basic equipment includes a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket and mobile phone for emergencies.

It is recommended to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest danger in summer apart from heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small brook into large rivers and increase the risk of mudslides and rockfall. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather forecast when planning routes. Heat thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of the day. Generally, it is worth setting out early in summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine trails (white-blue-white marked route), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of the routes so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Via Geo Admin, you can find lots of useful information such as where pastures with herd guard dogs, cow pastures and also wildlife conservation zones are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The association Urner Wanderwege is not liable for accidents that occur during the Urner Alpenkranz hikes.
