The jagged peaks of Piz Rotondo boldly rise above the Gerengletscher, while the sharp points of the Muttenhörner stand out distinctly from the long main ridge. Calm lies over the valley, and the unanswered letters on the desk become increasingly insignificant.

We leave the Rotondohütte SAC (2570 m) and follow the marked mountain hiking path up to the Tälligrat (2620 m). The following section leads us westwards over the Hinterer Wissbach to the Chrummegg (2427 m).

Here, the path ascends through a moraine slope of the Mutten glacier up to the Deieren-Älpetli (2593 m). Over the saddle (2747 m) of the Stotzigen Firsten, we reach three crystal-clear small lakes. The route then continues northwest through the slope below the Blauberg towards the forked depression of the Furkapass (2429 m) and via a path just above the pass road to the Galenböden (Hotel Furkablick). An incredible panorama awaits here. Proudly, the Galenstock towers over the valley; bizarre granite needles rise into the sky beside it. In this rocky scenery lies our day's goal. We ascend gently above the Furkapass and Galenböden towards the moraine ridge of the Sidelen glacier and, after crossing the Sidelenbach (2524 m), reach the distinctive Sidelenhütte SAC (2708 m) after the final climb through the hut path's steps in glacial debris.

Option:

Directly behind the hut, we ascend to Mount-Sunrise, Rottälligrat (2748 m). On the Rottälligrat, it continues northeast to the saddle and down over cliffs and scree to Pt. 2456 m. From here, we follow the mountain hiking path westwards again to Hinterer Wissbach. Warning: This old alpine route (T4) is no longer maintained.

Tip:

There are beautiful mountain crystals here. Maybe you can buy a souvenir at the Sidelenhütte.

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

For mountain and alpine hiking trails, knowledge of mountain hazards (rockfall, risk of slipping/falling, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate gear, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass, and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. Additionally, a first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies belong to the basic equipment.

It is advisable to make serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. Weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The biggest danger in summer besides heat are thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small brook into large rivers and increase the danger of mudslides and rockfall. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather forecast when planning routes. Heat thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. Generally, it is worthwhile to start early in summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They handle the organization and planning of tours so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Urner Wanderplaner and the Uri Outdoor App help with planning. Via Geo Admin, you can find many useful pieces of information, like where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures, and also wildlife resting areas are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The Urner Wanderwege association is not liable for accidents occurring during the Urner Alpenkranz hike.
