Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Option:
From the Sidelenhütte (2708 m), the alpine route climbs towards the clearly visible saddle of the lower Bielenlücke. Passing the bizarre rocks of the Schildkrötengrat and the rock towers called the Camel, we reach the lower Bielenlücke (2892 m). A fantastic view into the high alpine glacier world awaits us. During the descent, we cross the southern, debris-covered tip of the Tiefengletscher and hike via the splendidly laid-out hut path to the spacious Hotel Tiefenbach on the Furkapass road.
Along the way, we walk over a lot of moraine and block debris that is moving!
Tip:
The old glacier route of the option, which nowadays mostly consists of block debris, is unmarked. This leads to a challenging route finding. The tip of the Tiefengletscher has turned into a glacier lake. Alpine knowledge and appropriate equipment are necessary. For inexperienced people, a mountain guide or hiking leader is recommended.
Safety guidelines
Mountain hiking is demanding.
For mountain and alpine hikes, knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, risk of slipping/falling, weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with a grippy sole, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass, and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. For alpine hiking routes, rope, ice axe, and possibly crampons are additionally recommended. Additionally, basic equipment includes a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies.
It is advisable to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult even in summer. Besides heat, the biggest danger in summer is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can turn a small stream into a big river quickly, and the risk of mudslides and rockfall increases. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather forecast when planning routes. Warm weather thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time. Generally, it is recommended to start early in the summer.
Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine routes (marked white-blue-white), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of tours, so guests can simply enjoy the hike.
The Urner Wanderplaner and the Uri Outdoor App help with planning. Via Geo Admin, you can find many useful information such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures, and wildlife zones are located.
Hikers hike at their own risk. The Urner Wanderwege association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Urner Alpenkranz hike.
