From the Galleria Banchi (approx. 1980 m) on the south side of the Gotthard Pass (post bus stop after the tunnel), we hike via Lago di Fieud (2081 m) and Laghi Scuri (2398 m) with the view to the back to the old Tremola (San Gotthard Pass road). Down to the left, we see the Bedretto valley, and to the south, we have a nice panoramic view into Ticino. We continue hiking to Passo di Lucendro (2352 m). From there, our route continues as an old white-blue-white alpine hiking trail. At Cresta del Poncienetto (2560 m) there is a key section where, to get through safely, we have to assist ourselves a little with our hands. Wire ropes are mounted for security (however, these are sometimes damaged due to unstable rock). Then we traverse into the rocky terrain above Ganone towards Gane di Viei. There we take the hiking trail towards Cavanna Pass (2613 m) and follow the well-marked path along the ridge heading west past old military positions (partially dismantled), until the ridge narrows. We almost traverse horizontally always north of the Rongger ridge (2573 m) into the northern slope and reach the Hüendersattel (2692 m).
An alpine variant, which is not marked, leads downwards towards the Witenwasser glacier and the glacier lake (2539 m). The path is rocky, strewn with block debris, and difficult to find. Often, it still has snow-filled steep passages in summer that require full concentration.
After crossing the small bridge at the lake, the route ascends the last few meters upwards to the Rotondohütte SAC (2570 m).

Option:
- There is also a white-red-white marked mountain hiking trail via Rosso di Dentro, around Motto di Vinei to Passo di Cavanna.
- From Hüendersattel to Rotondohütte, there are also two red-white marked mountain hiking trails to choose from. One leads past "In den Hühnerstöcken" to the small lake (2433 m) and over the floodplain; the other via Hüenerstock and the glacier lake to the hut.
Safety guidelines
Mountain hiking is demanding.
Knowledge of mountain hazards (rockfall, slip/fall risk, sudden weather changes) is necessary for mountain and alpine hiking trails. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just a smartphone), compass, and altimeter belong to the basic gear. For alpine trails, rope, ice axe, and possibly crampons are additionally recommended. Also part of the basic equipment are a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies.
It is advisable to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult in summer. The greatest danger in summer besides heat are thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small stream into large rivers and increase the danger of mudslides and rockfall. Therefore, interpreting the weather forecast during route planning is important. Warm thunderclouds often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. In general, it is worth being on the move early in summer.
Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine trails (white-blue-white marked routes), and hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of tours so guests can simply enjoy the hike.
The Urner Wanderplaner and the Uri Outdoor App help with planning. Through Geo Admin, you can find many useful information such as where pastures with guarding dogs, mother cow pastures, and wildlife protection zones are located.
Hikers hike at their own risk. The Urner Wanderwege Association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Urner Alpenkranz hikes.
Attention: The safety cables (wire ropes) at Cresta del Poncietto (old white-blue-white alpine hiking trail) are sometimes damaged due to unstable rock!
