The metallic sound of clicking carabiners fuels our curiosity. With our heads tilted back, we spot climbers effortlessly scaling steep slabs that reach into the sky. They embody the well-known climbing myth of the Göschenen Valley.

About 200 m east of the Bergsee Hut SAC (2370 m), near a conspicuous cross, we leave the hut path and follow a blue-white signpost northeast. Mostly pathless over large scree fields, the route ascends to the foot of the imposing east face of Bergseeschijen, where, in good weather, numerous rope parties gather, then continues to an approximately 30 m high, inclined rock step. With the support of several chains, we climb diagonally to the right into the gap (point 2599 m) between Bergseeschijen and Hochschijen. From this gap, we first descend through a hollow to the northeast. Then we continue following the markings, which run somewhat up and down to the north. After a final ascent of about 150 m, we stand in the small notch (2570 m) left of the Horenfellistock. The view towards the granite towers of Salbitschijen rising far into the sky points to our goal today. The descent northward is somewhat steep down to the bridge over the Schiessend Bach. The current water level can make crossing the bridge difficult (information at the Bergsee or Voralp hut). The path now leads to an adventurous route over rocks and scree into green mountain meadows, crosses the Voralpreuss, and finally ascends the last 70 m to the Voralp Hut SAC (2126 m).

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author

Tip:

The crossing from the Göschenertal to the Voralp valley is high alpine - via ferrata set recommended. Less experienced hikers can enjoy the hike relaxed and safely with a mountain guide or a qualified hiking leader.

Option:

It is worth depositing luggage at the 2599 m mark to still ascend to the Bergseeschijen summit (2820 m) and enjoy the magnificent panorama there.

Safety guidelines

Mountain hiking is demanding.

For mountain and alpine hikes, knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/falling hazards, sudden weather changes) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic maps (not only smartphone), compass, and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. Additionally, a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies are part of the basic equipment.

It is recommended to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest danger in summer besides heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail quickly turn a small stream into large rivers, increasing the risk of mudflows and rockfalls. Therefore, it is important to interpret weather forecasts when planning routes. Heat thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can happen at any time of the day. In general, it is worth setting out early in summer.

Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4 difficulty) are recommended for alpine trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization and planning of the routes so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.

The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor App help with planning. Via Geo Admin, you can find lots of useful information such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures, and wildlife resting areas are located.

Hikers hike at their own risk. The Uri Hiking Association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Uri Alpenkranz hike.

Attention: The bridge over the Schiessend Bach is dismantled in autumn, and depending on water level, this can make crossing difficult (information can be obtained from the hut wardens of the Bergsee or Voralp hut).
