We descend from the Dammahütte SAC (2439 m) via the stair-step path and hike with a view over the Göschenenalp valley downstream. As an option, the marked panoramic trail is available for the descent. Without crossing the young Dammareuss, we follow the circular path around the Göschenenalp lake to the trail junction at the Chelenalpreuss. At the Vorderröti (1800 m), we cross the Chelenreuss and turn towards Chelenalp. Framed by a fantastic backdrop in a magnificent and lonely mountain world, the hut trail leads over alpine pastures and rocky sections past many cairns and colorful trail markers into the Chelenalp valley. The path stretches out, but the mighty valley end with the Chelen glacier, the view of the winter mountains, and the numerous streams that offer welcome cooling reward the effort. After the alpine buildings and ruins of Hinterröti (1925 m), the trail meets a well-visible cairn (2129 m) and then overcomes some rock steps secured with fixed ropes. Via an ascent in many switchbacks, we overcome the last steep section and reach the Chelenalphütte SAC (2350 m) over reddish weathered rocky knobs.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Option:
There is a via ferrata route (K3/T4) from the Dammahütte directly towards Hinterröti and Chelenreuss. The hut team knows if the route is passable and rents out the necessary equipment.
Sometimes after heavy rain, the Chelenreuss can carry too much water for crossing.
Tip:
In the Göschenenalp valley, you will find a wide selection of circular hikes - from the popular day hike around the Göschenenalp lake to multi-day circular hikes with overnight stays in a mountain hut.
Safety guidelines
Mountain hiking is demanding.
For mountain and alpine hiking trails, knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slip/fall hazard, weather change) is necessary. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not just smartphone), compass and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. Additionally, basic equipment includes a pocket first aid kit, emergency blanket and mobile phone for emergencies.
It is recommended to do serious route planning and careful preparation for every hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult even in summer. The biggest danger in summer besides heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail quickly turn a small brook into a large river, and the risk of mudflows and rockfalls increases. Therefore, it is important to interpret the weather report when planning tours. Warm thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but front thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. In general, it is worth being on the move early in the summer.
Mountain guides or qualified hiking leaders (up to T4) are recommended for alpine hiking trails (white-blue-white marked routes), hiking leaders for hikes and mountain hikes. They take over the organization & planning of the tours so that guests can simply enjoy the hike.
The Uri hiking planner and the Uri Outdoor app help with planning. Via Geo Admin you can find many useful information such as where pastures with herd protection dogs, mother cow pastures and also wildlife protection zones are located.
Hikers hike at their own risk. The Uri Hiking Trails Association is not liable for accidents that occur during the Uri Alpine Circle hike.
