Hike

The hike connects two castles over 800 years old – the Aargau water castle Hallwyl and the Lucerne Heidegg Castle. For centuries they were centers of power for noble families. Unlike other Seetal castles that were destroyed by the Confederates in the Sempach War, Hallwyl and Heidegg survived the turmoil. Up to Aesch, the route leads you along the lakeshore, past vineyards and lush meadows. From there, it continues along the flank of the Lindenberg through woods to the former knight's commandery of Hitzkirch. There, where the Teutonic Order settled in the Middle Ages, stylish celebrations or inspiring seminars are held today. Along the way, you will encounter proud high-stem orchards. Around 56,000 high-stem trees are maintained in the Lucerne Seetal – another 20,000 in the Aargau Seetal. You can obtain the products made from the fruits at Hochstamm Seetal. Soon you will reach Heidegg Castle. Begin the visit of the patrician castle with the mysterious production around the castle’s history. In the over 800-year-old tower cellar, the oldest residential building in the canton of Lucerne, you will experience an animated spatial audio play that delights young and old alike. After visiting the exhibition, a walk through the rose garden is worthwhile.
