Göschenen Trail

Solitary winter landscapes and an enchanting forest beckon along the snowshoe trail toward Göscheneralp.

This easy snowshoe trail begins near the Göschenen hydroelectric power plant, which can be toured by appointment. It first follows the Göschenerreuss, a tributary of the Reuss that originates at the Chelen Glacier. Of particular note is the chapel on the other side of the river near the hamlet of Abfrutt. It is dedicated to St. Matthias, the patron saint of avalanche victims.

On the way back through the snow-covered Bitzi Forest, the trail reaches its highest point above Ängi (1,194 m above sea level). Finally, the trail heads downhill again: starting gently and then becoming somewhat steeper after a hairpin turn, hikers make their way toward the destination at the hydroelectric power plant.
