The second stage of the Obwalden High Trail leads from Langis through the vast Glaubenberg moorland over several passes to Schönbüel - with views of Lake Brienz.

Langis above Lake Sarnen is a well-known area for cross-country skiing and snowshoe hikes in winter. In summer, the area is home to tranquil and impressive nature. At around 130 square kilometers, the Glaubenberg moor landscape is the largest moor landscape in Switzerland.

Between Pilatus and Glaubenbielen Pass, moors, small groups of trees and wide open spaces spread out. Rare birds such as capercaillie, black grouse and hazel grouse live here. If you're lucky, you might even spot tracks of a lynx.

The hike begins at the Berghotel Langis. First, the path leads along a road up to the Glaubenberg Pass at 1543 meters. This connects Sarnen with the Entlebuch. This is followed by a beautiful hiking trail with sweeping views of the mountains of Central Switzerland, the Bernese Oberland and the striking Schrattenflue.

You reach the Sattelpass and later Loo via a gravel road. Small trees now line the path. After around four hours, you pass a small lake below the Rubihütte and reach the Glaubenbielenpass.

From here, the trail climbs further up to Jänzimatt. Once again, a beautiful view of the Schrattenflue opens up. The road soon turns into a narrow mountain path leading towards Männli. Continue along the ridge to Berghaus Schönbüel.

If you wish, you can stop off here and enjoy the view. The detour to Höch Gumme is particularly rewarding. From the summit, the view extends deep down to the turquoise waters of Lake Brienz. The Wetterhorn, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau can be seen on the horizon.

The Lungern-Turren aerial cableway has been in operation again since April 30, 2016.

Catering is provided by the Berghaus on Schönbüel and the Turren restaurant at the top station of the Lungern-Turren cable car. The Berghaus Schönbüel also offers cozy rooms for overnight stays.

Safety guidelines

This hike leads partly through military weapons and firing ranges. During firing, red/white flags, red/white balloons or (at night) 3 red lamps in the shape of a triangle are hoisted or set up at clearly visible points on the edge of the endangered area and in the weapon positions. Entering the endangered area is life-threatening and therefore prohibited. The instructions of the barrier posts must be followed.
