Archaeology cellar Willisau
During excavations in the cellar of the Schlossschür in 2009, part of the town wall and the well-preserved remains of the cellar of the Kirchherrenhaus, which was built at the same time, were uncovered. In 2010, the archaeological cellar was opened to the public as a joint project between the town of Willisau and the Lucerne Cantonal Archaeology Department, with generous financial support from the Eugen Meyer Foundation Willisau.
The cellar, with its original preserved floor made of tightly packed Bollenstein stones and the historic embrasure windows, which once looked out onto the town moat that no longer exists today, is a unique testimony to medieval architecture. A walk-on glass floor was installed in the area of the Bollenstein floor, providing a view of the original floor covering.
The modernized archaeology cellar in the Schlossschüür Willisau has been open again since February 2025. After almost 15 years, renovation was necessary: the masonry was cleaned, stabilized and the media system renewed. Short films and slideshows are shown on the large screen, bringing the town's history to life.
Access to the cellar is in the south-east corner directly next to the city wall and is barrier-free.
