- Start: Kröntenhütte
- Destination: Spannorthütte
From the Kröntenhütte SAC (1903 m) the path leads level to the Obersee, crosses the outflow over a bridge, and climbs right towards the Oberseemännli. Before the last rise, the route branches left towards the ridge, which we follow to the cairn on the Graw Stock (2453 m). The path continues over smoothly polished rocks and firn fields to the upper Graw. Ahead of us lies the vast glacier of the Glatt Firn, which we traverse roped in the next hours in a slight left curve towards the western rock ribs of the Schwarzstöckli. A fascinating high mountain world surrounds us. The steep walls of the Schlossberg drop vertically into the depths. The weathered towers of the Spannort group provide a unique mountain experience.
Between the Schwarzstöckli and east of the Gross Spannort, the alpine route bypasses the crevasse chaos and reaches after a glacier hollow with a small counter ascent the yellowish-red dolomite rock of the Schlossberglücke (2626 m). Over snowfields and scree beside the mighty Schlossberg southwest wall, we descend and are happy to reach the Spannorthütte SAC (1956 m) after an exciting day.

Author´s Tip / Recommendation of the author
Tip:
Alpine glacier experience is necessary and a mountain guide is recommended!
Due to glacier melting, the ascent to the Schlossberglücke has become more demanding. Be careful: danger of rockfall.
Option:
Another accommodation option is available down in the valley at the Stäfeli Alp (1393 m).
Safety guidelines
Alpine and mountain hiking is demanding.
Knowledge of dangers in the mountains (rockfall, slipping/falling hazard, sudden weather changes) is necessary for mountain and alpine hiking paths. Sturdy hiking boots with grippy soles, weather-appropriate equipment, topographic national maps (not only smartphone), compass, and altimeter belong to the basic equipment. For alpine routes, rope, ice axe, and possibly crampons are additionally recommended. Additionally, a small first aid kit, emergency blanket, and mobile phone for emergencies belong to the basic equipment.
It is advisable to make a serious tour plan and careful preparation for each hike. The weather in the mountains can change very quickly. Fog can also make orientation difficult even in summer. The greatest danger in summer besides heat is thunderstorms. Thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail can quickly turn a small brook into a large river, increasing the danger of mudflows and rockfall. Therefore, interpreting the weather report during tour planning is important. Heat thunderstorms often come only in the afternoon, but frontal thunderstorms can occur at any time of day. Generally, it is worth setting out early in summer.
Mountain guides are recommended for alpine routes involving glacier crossings. They take over the organization and planning of tours so guests can simply enjoy the hike.
The Urner Wanderplanner and the Uri Outdoor app assist with planning. Via Geo Admin you can find many useful information, e.g., where pastures with herd protection dogs, cattle pastures, and wildlife resting zones are located.
Hikers hike at their own responsibility. The Urner Wanderwege association is not liable for accidents occurring during the Urner Alpenkranz hikes.
Attention: Alpine glacier experience is absolutely necessary here! Mountain guide recommended! Due to glacier melting, the ascent to the Schlossberglücke has become more demanding. The Gross Spannort is like a sand mountain, erosion affects it; stones often roll down from there! Be careful: danger of rockfall!
